a girl after my own heart

our Emma Anne...
a girl after her grandma's heart...blue jeans and red boots....and her favorite pretty dress to top the ensemble off...
..makes sense to me...
I remember another little girl who wore pretty little dresses that her momma made for her to wear to school...so much time & love went into those dresses...full gathered skirts that twirled when you twirled, crinolines that had a delicious crackle & bounced when she ran...puffed sleeves and always... always a big sash with a huge bow tied in the back...sweet little ruffled stockings and patent leather mary janes...
the little girl loved the pretty dresses, but oh, she longed to run and play...hanging from the monkey bars and sliding down the slide...out doing any of those ol' boys...
but, try as she might to stay tidy, those pretty dresses were in shambles by the end of the school day.
I would ride the bus home...my knees scraped, my hem sagging & my sash stapled back on by my 1st grade teacher, Miss Little, who didn't know how to sew a stitch...they wouldn't have lasted anyway.
yes, a girl after my own heart...

Your grandaughter is beautiful and her style will take her anywhere she wants to go. We should all travel through life so prepared!
I am pleased that you have started to write here. I have loved and been inspired by your artwork since the Holly Berry Hill days and visit Deerfield Farmhouse often as well as Sparrow's Cottage. Currently, I receive Katie's newsletter and enjoyed the pattern that you contributed this last December. Thank you.

What a wonderful photo and beautiful tale! My little one (she's 12 now) used to run and climb and cook in the mud too, with her best dresses, striped stockings and pink rainboots. Her teachers said they could always tell who of their students dressed themselves - the ones who looked ready for a party and still practical enough to climb a tree! Mine always knew what she wanted to wear, and still has a mind of her own...!

What a beautiful little girl! And such sweet words! I have one little girl and three boys... and she, too, wears pants along with her dresses! In fact, just about the only time she'll wear a dress sans jeans is for church! =)

oh this is just too adorable for words!! And may I say at gal after my own heart as well. I am the only girl with 4 brothers, as a wee thing my mother couldn't bare for me to wear anything but dresses...the time soon came that it wasn't at all practical in many situations. Still, I wasn't to own a pair of REAL jeans until much later. I love the way this precious girl managed to capture both looks at the same time!!

Oh mom! This is such a nice post! Yes, I even remember Grandma telling me the stories of Christine leaving for school dressed so nice and coming home in tatters...the only thing that has changed now is that those silly mochas jump out and get you. It's the lids, I just know it! hehe
Love you momma!

I has been to your blog before, and read the wonderful post about your walk with the kids. Now I am reading your newest post about the chickens after reading Katie's blog about the chicks, and her mother's heart. How blessed you both are to have such connection among the generations. I was crying, and my kids wanted to know why - I siad it is becaue my heart has been touched. Thank you.

Oh Christine:
This brought tears to my eyes. I am 58 and the best marble (puries and cat eyes) player & tether ball in elementary school. I came home with the full skirt pulled out of the waist because I had to rest my knees on the skirt part of the full skirted dress so I could stay out of the dirt : ) My Mom (she is 99) would plait my hair on an old backless stool in the kitchen and as soon as I ran to school I had those plaits down blowing in the wind. Those were the days before we could wear pants to school : )
You brought back some great memories
Thank you
