my love affair with an old house

Nearly 20 years ago, we were out for a Sunday drive around the rolling foot hills
of the high desert,
looking for abandoned homesteads of those brave souls who stopped here
on their way along the Oregon Trail instead
of going on to the fertile & lush Willamette Valley. I remember very well, the very moment when coming around the steep bend in the dirt road and finding her there...
and the catch in my throat!
She rose up from the pasture in once splendid elegance.
Her windows looked out with hopeful eyes.
"I don't often speak to strangers", she confided, "but you"...she said,
"I know you". "Never mind that the cows come and go through my open doors and gaze out from broken windows while they thoughtfully chew their cud... come live with me", she said. "My rooms are waiting for love letters in every corner. Your lovely Mt. Jefferson can be seen from my every window. My fireside has a place for your chair and your ever present stack of books.
The comforting pat of your grand children's little bare feet
running up and down would be most welcome here.
The sounds & smell of Sunday dinner being made, laughter coming from the kitchen,
the scent of the sagebrush gently blowing sheets behind me on the line...
Come live with me, she says. I'll plant a rose by the kitchen door.

Oh mom...poor old house. When will you bring her back to life? It has never been a selfish dream, but I believe it is something about the soul of a home that calls to you. Make her up with your two hands.

'No frivolous dalliance here; this is where the heart dwells.' This is your place in the countryside where history lives and it calls to you.
Perhaps it is a backdrop of a story yet untold of The Ladyes of Deerfield and Mr. Jefferson.
It is up to you to bring the home back to life so we may share it too...
XO Susan

Christine,
I had the same thing happen to me....a 1900's schoolhouse. As you know, I am now opening my own shop in the carriage house/gymnasium and, with my husband Bill, we will give the schoolhouse the much needed love and attention it deserves. I answered when my old house whispered. You can too.

Warmest bear hugs, Aleta

I have seen this beauty once before on your blog, Christe`. I had no idea that it was abandoned. I want it to be yours. I hope with all my heart that one day you will own that beautiful, serene house so that you can give it the right dose of home.

Dearest Christe` ~ Ah.. I have been away much too long! I am enjoying catching up and loving how your heart shines through in all that you write. I am taken back to an olde, olde home with many stories told and untold. It's keeper~ a wee little mouse that scurried from room to room inviting people to see more delights within the walls. A bit smaller than a cow, but no less a keeper. You make my heart smile!

Christine, that house is "so you". I wish you could have it. It is just so wonderful!! It always makes me so sad when I see a lovely old home, one that was once alive and special, and now, abandoned and forgotten.
